A Polk County Fence Team That Knows the Territory

Polk County isn't a single market — it's three distinct communities with different characters and different fence needs. Cedartown is the county seat and commercial hub, where historic neighborhoods mix with new construction subdivisions like Branch Street and Sunset Valley. Rockmart has a working-class industrial identity shaped by the Goodyear textile mill legacy and the active Rockmart Slate Corporation, plus the Silver Comet Trail running directly through downtown. Aragon is a quiet mill-town community with newer suburban growth at White Oak Valley and very little fence competition of any kind.

We're based in Hiram — about 35 minutes east on US-278 — and we've worked Polk County properties long enough to know that some Rockmart yards sit above slate that requires a power auger, that Cedartown's Northwest Historic District adds a conversation about materials for street-facing fences, and that the pool fence code here is 5 feet minimum, not the 4-foot Georgia state default. That local knowledge matters when you're planning a fence that has to last.

Cities & Communities We Serve in Polk County

Cedartown

As Polk County's seat and largest city (~10,300 residents), Cedartown offers the most diverse project mix in the county. Older neighborhoods near Big Spring Park — one of the largest limestone springs in the South, producing 4 million gallons per day at 301 Wissahickon Avenue — tend to be fence replacement and repair jobs on mature properties. The Northwest Cedartown Historic District adds material considerations for street-facing fences in that bounded area. Newer subdivisions on the city's edges (Sunset Valley, Branch Street new construction) are first-install markets where wood privacy and vinyl are common requests. The Cedartown Depot Trailhead puts the Silver Comet Trail directly in the heart of downtown, and trail-adjacent properties often want privacy fencing that keeps their yards usable while maintaining curb appeal.

Rockmart

Rockmart's identity comes from two forces: its industrial slate-mining heritage and the Silver Comet Trail, which passes through downtown at mile marker 37.68 as the Riverwalk corridor through Seaborn Jones Park. The Lanier Homes neighborhood on Goodyear Avenue — the former Goodyear textile mill worker community — is a strong fence replacement market with older housing stock and modest budgets where galvanized chain link and wood privacy are the right conversation. Arbor Chase and Forest North represent Rockmart's newer, higher-end residential segment where HOA-compliant materials and aluminum ornamental are relevant. On the industrial side, the Rockmart Slate Corporation and the broader manufacturing base along the US-278 corridor create commercial chain link demand. One thing we check before every Rockmart quote: the ground. Properties on the east side of town near the quarry formations may hit hard slate at 18–24 inches, which changes the post-setting approach and timeline.

Aragon

Aragon is the smallest incorporated community in our Polk County service area, with approximately 1,500 residents and no traffic lights. It's a 25-minute drive from our Hiram shop via US-278 and SR-101 — our closest Polk County market. The Aragon Mill Village neighborhood is classic older housing stock with aging fence infrastructure, primarily chain link and wood. The White Oak Valley subdivision (built 2017–2018) represents the town's suburban growth edge, with HOA fees around $19–21/month and median home prices near $315,000. Those HOA properties require material and height approval from the association before installation. For rural properties east of town, the typical northwest Georgia mix of red clay soil, rolling terrain, and larger lot sizes means longer runs and occasional slope work.

Top Fence Styles in Polk County

wood privacy fence installed in Polk County Georgia

Wood Privacy (6 ft Dog Ear)

The most requested style across Cedartown and Rockmart neighborhoods. Works on standard lots and slopes alike — we use stepped or racked panels depending on grade. Red clay soil means we dig 30–36 inches for post depth to prevent frost heave and settling.

galvanized chain link fence for agricultural and commercial use in Polk County Georgia

Chain Link — Galvanized or Vinyl-Coated

The practical choice for agricultural properties, commercial/industrial sites near Rockmart, and long rural perimeter runs. Schedule 40 pipe for gate posts; standard 11.5-gauge woven wire fabric for residential. Vinyl-coated black or green is a cleaner residential option for Aragon and Lanier Homes-area budgets.

ornamental aluminum pool fence in Polk County Georgia

Ornamental Aluminum (Pool & Decorative)

Required for pool enclosures that also need to meet Polk County's 5-foot minimum — stricter than Georgia's 4-ft state standard. Also the right choice for Arbor Chase, Valley Edge, and White Oak Valley HOA communities where the CC&Rs specify ornamental or open-style materials for street-facing sections.

post and rail fence for acreage and agricultural land in Polk County Georgia

Post-and-Rail / Agricultural Fencing

Polk County's A-1 zoned acreage — horse properties, cattle operations, and hobby farms especially in the county's western rural stretches toward the Alabama line — are prime candidates for 3- or 4-board post-and-rail, woven wire livestock panels, or T-post woven wire for cost-efficient long-run coverage.

Permits, HOAs, and Compliance in Polk County

Pool fences: Polk County's unincorporated zoning ordinance, Section 710.04, requires pool enclosures to be a minimum of 5 feet tall with a self-closing, self-latching gate. This is stricter than Georgia's statewide minimum of 4 feet (48 inches). If you are planning a pool fence and you've heard "4 feet is fine," that applies to the state standard — but not to unincorporated Polk County. Contact Polk County Building Inspection at 770-749-2104 or dcook@polkga.org to confirm current requirements before we quote.

Height limits in unincorporated areas: Under Sec. 710.04, fences in any yard fronting a public or private street are limited to 6 feet and must sit at least 2 feet from the right-of-way. Side and rear yards away from street frontage can go up to 8 feet. The finished side of any fence must face outward toward the neighbor or street.

City vs. county rules: This is where Polk County gets complicated. Cedartown, Rockmart, and Aragon each operate under their own city ordinances — not under the county's Sec. 710.04. If your address is inside city limits, the county code doesn't apply. Contact Cedartown's Building Inspector, Rockmart Building Official Mike Cheeks at 770-684-2720, or Aragon City Hall at 770-684-6563 ext. 160 to get the correct local answer. We help verify jurisdiction during the estimate process so nothing is assumed.

HOAs: Polk County has relatively low HOA density compared to neighboring Douglas or Carroll counties. Most rural and older residential properties have no HOA. However, the newer Rockmart subdivisions — Arbor Chase ($33/month HOA), Valley Edge ($13–21/month), and Highland Park ($4/month) — and Aragon's White Oak Valley ($19–21/month) do have CC&Rs. Get written HOA approval before ordering materials.

Historic districts: Cedartown's Northwest Historic District and Rockmart's Downtown Historic District (National Register, 2009) don't carry automatic fence restrictions, but street-facing fence materials in these areas should be compatible with historic neighborhood character. Wood picket, aluminum ornamental, or simple board-on-board styles are appropriate. We flag this during the estimate if your address falls within a district boundary.

Rural & Acreage Projects in Polk County

Polk County's project mix skews meaningfully rural compared to our Carroll, Douglas, or Paulding County markets. The county's A-1 zoned land covers a large portion of the county — particularly the stretches west of Cedartown toward the Alabama state line, north and south of Rockmart along the county's agricultural corridors, and the rural edges surrounding Aragon. These properties typically need long-run solutions: woven wire on T-posts for cattle and livestock, post-and-board for horses, or high-tensile electric for perimeter management.

For these projects, we plan around the full perimeter, identify gate placement for equipment access, and account for terrain changes — Polk County's rolling Piedmont hills mean post intervals and panel heights need to accommodate grade transitions. On acreage in the eastern part of the county closer to Paulding, red clay is the dominant challenge: we set posts 30–36 inches deep and use concrete to prevent heave and movement over the first few seasons.

Polk County Fence FAQs

Permit guidance, material advice, and local knowledge for Cedartown, Rockmart, and Aragon homeowners.

1) Do I need a permit to install a fence in unincorporated Polk County?

Polk County's unincorporated zoning ordinance (Sec. 710.04) does not explicitly mandate a permit for standard residential fences under 8 feet. However, pools require a permit and a 5-ft enclosure fence. Contact Polk County Building Inspection at 770-749-2104 to confirm requirements for your specific project before construction begins.

2) What is Polk County's pool fence requirement?

Polk County's unincorporated code (Sec. 710.04) requires pool enclosures to be at least 5 feet tall with a self-closing, self-latching gate. This is stricter than Georgia's state minimum of 4 feet (48 inches). If you're inside Cedartown, Rockmart, or Aragon city limits, check with the respective city building department for their local rule.

3) Do fence rules differ between unincorporated Polk County and the cities?

Yes. Cedartown, Rockmart, and Aragon each maintain their own city ordinances separate from unincorporated Polk County's Sec. 710.04. If your address is inside city limits, the city's building department governs your project — not the county. We help verify jurisdiction before any project starts.

4) How tall can a fence be in unincorporated Polk County?

Under Sec. 710.04, fences in any yard fronting a public or private street are capped at 6 feet and must sit at least 2 feet from the right-of-way. Side and rear yards away from street frontage allow up to 8 feet. Industrial zones follow the same 8-ft general maximum with the same 6-ft street-facing limit.

5) What fence materials work best for acreage and agricultural properties?

For livestock and horse properties on A-1 zoned land, post-and-board, woven wire, and high-tensile options are standard. For larger rural residential lots, galvanized or vinyl-coated chain link handles long runs efficiently. Polk County's rural western areas toward the Alabama border are typical candidates for these styles.

6) Why does post-hole digging sometimes cost more on Rockmart properties?

Rockmart sits atop significant slate deposits — the Rockmart Slate Corporation has operated on those same formations since the 1850s. In some properties, post holes hit hard slate or rocky substrate requiring a power auger and additional labor. We assess site conditions during the estimate so there are no cost surprises mid-project.

7) Do I need HOA approval for a fence in Rockmart or Aragon?

Most of Polk County's unincorporated land has no HOA at all. However, newer subdivisions near Rockmart (Arbor Chase, Valley Edge, Highland Park) and Aragon (White Oak Valley) do have HOAs with fence material and height rules. Always check your CC&Rs before ordering materials, and get HOA approval in writing before we begin.

8) Do you serve all three cities — Cedartown, Rockmart, and Aragon?

Yes. We serve all three cities and unincorporated Polk County. From our Hiram shop, Aragon is about 25 minutes, Rockmart about 30–35 minutes, and Cedartown about 40 minutes via US-278. We provide one free estimate regardless of which part of the county you're in.
